Kristen Hayashi is currently engaged in the study of Asian American history, Los Angeles, and Public History as a Ph.D. candidate in History at the University of California, Riverside. She is currently engaged in obtaining a historic designation for the Japanese Hospital in Boyle Heights on behalf of the Little Tokyo Historical Society. Her involvement with taiko drumming and curatorial work at a museum in Los Angeles are additional ways that she contributes to the preservation of various aspects of cultural heritage preservation.
I am currently working on obtaining a local historic cultural monument designation from the City of Los Angeles for the Japanese Hospital, a site that symbolizes places of importance to underrepresented communities. Additionally, I am developing a taiko (Japanese drum) workshop series on behalf of my community group to preserve and share the spirit of traditional Japanese drumming, as well as to empower, inspire creativity, and create cultural understanding for children ages 8-12.
